Social Science & Policy
Social science researchers seek to address the human dimensions of coastal resilience
Across the social sciences, researchers affiliated with the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience target resources and facilitate collaboration to address the many human elements to sea level rise, climate change, and coastal resilience.
Social and policy phenomena are investigated in a wide range of environments - from organizations and associations, to government agencies, to community-affiliated networks - and at the individual and household level right up to research of a national or international scope.
The Social Science & Policy program seeks to
Connect natural system data, built environment data, and social-behavioral data to generate insights and knowledge about the impacts of sea level rise on people and the systems that sustain them
Pursue actionable information relative to well-being, pain, suffering, and longevity of populations
Consider concepts such as justice, access, equity, opportunity, representation, and governance in the research of these impacts
Support and facilitate research, education, and engagement efforts related to a range of predictors of population impacts, from vulnerable and medically fragile populations, to risk perceptions and social behavior
Focus areas
Household adaptation and response
Emergency management and preparedness culture
Environmental policy and regulation
Citizen input and action
Public finance, public-private partnerships and coordination, and regional governance and coordinated response
