Our Focus In A Collaborative Environment

RESEARCH

Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience (ICAR) focuses on research that tackles strategic, “grand challenge” questions and develops tactical, practice-relevant knowledge needed to strengthen coastal resilience.

Key research focus areas include

Improves understanding of interactions among sea level, coastal ocean circulation, and the larger climate system.

Dr. Tal Ezer | Sea level rise, storm surges, hurricanes and the Gulf Stream
Dr. Navid Tahvildari | Modeling coastal and ocean hydrodynamics

Analyzes on the human dimensions of coastal resilience.

Dr. Michelle Covi & Dr. Gail Nicula | Risk communications and stakeholder engagement
Dr. Wie Yusuf | Regional governance and whole-of-community approaches to resilience

Dr. Michael Allen | Vulnerability to extreme heat

EDUCATION

ICAR works collaboratively to develop and support interdisciplinary academic and professional development programs with a focus on resilience broadly, and coastal resilience specifically. These include curricular and extracurricular academic programming, including service learning, experiential and entrepreneurial opportunities.

OUTREACH

ICAR activities emphasize engagement with the community and collaboration with partners to promote synthesis, integration, knowledge sharing, and coordination of research and education activities.

Events

ODU organized and co-sponsored the Hampton Roads Resilient Region Reality Check to
  1. Capture the perceptions of the Hampton Roads community on their risks associated with sea level rise
  2. Engage stakeholders in discussion within and across different stakeholder groups
  3. Assess the willingness, at a regional level, to address SLR-related issues and prepare for the coming changes
