Social Science & Policy

The Social Science and Policy of Coastal Resilience program area is a topic-focused area under which ICAR will target resources and facilitate collaboration to address the human dimensions of coastal resilience.

The program area includes investigation of social and policy phenomena within a wide range of environments (e.g., organizational, associational, governmental, networks) and at all scales (e.g., individual, household, group, regional, national, and international).

The topics addressed within this program area necessarily are often cross-cutting with the other ICAR program areas and are illustrated by the following quote:

Connecting natural system data, built environment data, and social-behavioral data is essential … it comes down generating insights and knowledge about the impacts on people and the systems which sustain them … it is a worthy endeavor to pursue actionable information relative to well-being, pain, suffering, and longevity of people … and concepts such as justice, access, equity, opportunity, representation, and governance should be often considered in the research enterprise

Joshua Behr

The program area supports and facilitates research, engagement, and education efforts related to Vulnerable & Medically Fragile Populations, Risk Perceptions & Social Behavior, Preparedness & Recovery, Public Policy & Governance, and Social-Environmental Justice. More specifically, the program area addresses interests across the following areas:
