The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Fellowship
In coordination with the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine, the Office of Research and Institute for Coastal Adaptation & Resilience (ICAR) invite submissions for the 2021 Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering & Science (COVES) Fellowship for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Fellowship is a 12-week fellowship program of the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (VASEM). Graduate student and postdoctoral fellows will serve as science advisors in a variety of possible placements, including legislative offices, executive agencies, or prominent companies and nonprofits in the state of Virginia. Fellows will gain experience by serving their host office and performing relevant tasks such as researching, drafting, and revising relevant policies. Fellows will also be paired with a VASEM member who will serve as an experienced science policy mentor throughout the fellowship.
COVES Fellows will be current STEM graduate students or postdoctoral fellows from participating universities across the Commonwealth of Virginia, selected based on career interests, desire to learn, and scientific integrity.
Fellows will be matched to offices who have agreed to accept a Fellow based on mutual interest and placement availability. During the first week of the Fellowship, Fellows will attend a science policy bootcamp and orientation that will offer training in science policy and communication and will provide an introduction to governance and policy-making in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In addition to their work in policy offices, COVES Fellows will be paired with a mentor from VASEM and will participate in VASEM briefings, committee meetings, and the annual summit. Fellows will serve from May 17th through August 6th, 2021 and receive a minimum stipend of $8,500 and $1,500 professional development funds. Like the 2020 Fellowship, the 2021 COVES Fellowship will run primarily remotely, in-person events will be subject to current COVID-19 restrictions.
Applying for the 2021 COVES Fellowship Program
Have you thought you could make a difference by applying the knowledge you’ve gained as a scientist or engineer to the pressing challenges facing society? The Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Fellowship program will give you firsthand exposure to how policy is made at the state level, helping you determine if this is a good choice for you.Developed by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, the COVES Fellowship program enables young researchers to spend 12 weeks during the summer serving as science and technology advisors in legislative offices and executive agencies as well as with prominent Virginia companies and nonprofits. To learn more about the COVES Fellowship program, information sessions (hosted by VASEM) will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd (3pm) and Monday, February 8th (4pm). Advance registration is required to attend the information sessions (see bottom of page for registration links).
As a COVES Fellow, you will:
A committee made up of ODU faculty and staff will review and select up to three submissions to submit to VASEM for the final selection of awardees. The ODU selection committee is looking for applications with a resilience component for this year’s competition.
